Yoshio Shirai was a pioneer in Japanese combat sports, becoming the first ever Japanese boxer to win a world title when he defeated Dado Marino for the Undisputed Flyweight Championship in 1952. Guided by his manager Alvin Rober Cahn, Shirai transitioned from an aggressive brawler to a technical defensive specialist. He successfully defended his world title four times before retiring in 1955. In 1977, he was inducted into the Ring Magazine Hall of Fame.
